This is a big assignment worth up to 115 points. Please read Chapters 10 ("Missionary Preparation") & 11 ("Charting a Path from Here to There") in the textbook (pages 161- 189 in the print edition or Kindle locations 4110 - 5019). (I am intentionally loading some of the bigger assignments into the middle of the semester.)
I know that not everyone taking this class is planning to be a missionary. But if you're not, in the future you might be called upon to help someone who is. So I want you to use your imagination and think through the process of preparing for the "missionary life." Of course, some of it would depend on the setting into which you have been called. And some of it would depend on what you think your missionary assignment might be. (If you are called to serve as a missionary physician your preparation time would probably be years longer than if you were called to serve as a missionary plumber.)
I want you to create a personal plan for becoming a missionary. If you were called to serve as a missionary, what steps would you need to take and how long do you think it would take you to prepare to get there?
You might find it helpful to organize the information around the questions -- who? what? when? where? how? and why? Explain who you are going to serve as a missionary. What would you be doing in their midst? What training would you need? When would you be able to go? Where are these people? How would you get there? (That is, what are the steps in your life that you would have to go through to get from where you are now to where you are living as a missionary in their midst?) Why would you choose to go to these people in particular? Why would you go in the capacity to which you are preparing? (for example, as a missionary physician or a missionary plumber) And why would you have to take each of the steps needed to get there? Make sure that your responses to these questions include interaction with the reading in the textbook.
Also, for the purposes of this assignment, your missionary destination should be to people from a culture different than your own.

1. Make a 6-10-minute video of yourself explaining your plan. Post it on YouTube and send me the link. You will need to use some visuals such as a map or a flip-chart to illustrate your points. If you know how to use presentation software such as PowerPoint or Google Slides you can use those.
2. Write a traditional essay that explains your plan. It should be at least 1,200 words long. You can share it with me as a Google Doc or email it to me embedded in the email (no attachments please) at bboydston@piu.edu.
