Lesson #5 -- The Theology of Mission

Please read all of chapter 5 "Encountering Mission Theology" in the textbook  (starts at Kindle location 1736 or p 69 in the print edition). The point of this complex chapter is to get us thinking of missions as something we do because we have certain well-thought-out theological convictions. That is, we want to take it very seriously.

After you have read the entire chapter, return to "Question 4: What Motifs in Our Mission Theology Complement our Guiding Theme?" (starts at Kindle location 1963 or p 76 in the print edition). Choose one of the six motifs (see diagram 5.7) that motivates you. Explain what the motif is (that is, define it) and how it fits with the central theme. Then explain why it resonates with you and motivates you.

Send your essay to me at bboydston@piu.edu embedded in an email (no attachments) or share it with me as a Google Doc. Remember, don't wait for my response before you go to Lesson #6. Start the next lesson immediately.

I understand that this will be the first time that some of you are encountering the field of theology. So, I don't want you to feel overwhelmed. Your responses do not have to be long but do try to interact with what you are learning in the book. At this point, I will be very happy just to see that you are working on understanding what this is all about. It takes time so don't be discouraged.

YOU CAN EARN UP TO 30 POINTS FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT. Reach out to me if you need any clarification.
